Sex is a metaphor for the pleasures of reading in my debut novel, set in Seattle in 2009. Vivianna Post writes gay erotica. Before his death in 2007, Vivianna’s father Sebastian was a Pulitzer Prize winner who had little time for family. Her mother is an artist and academic who does not support her aspirations. The only family member who does is her brother Tristan, who gave up a promising career as a musician to write experimental fiction. Vivianna and Tristan attend a writer’s conference where Tristan hopes to meet his hero Jasper Caldwell. After a long wait in line to talk to him, Jasper blows them off to leave with a young blonde. Tristan sinks farther in to a depression he has been fighting for years and finally commits suicide. A year later Vivianna attends a lecture given by Jasper in Seattle where she confronts him; blaming him for her brother’s death. Later, Jasper comes to the same night club where Vivianna dances. Following several initial complications, Jasper and Vivianna begin an official period of dating and Vivianna is happy though wonders if their differing attitudes toward literature and work will ultimately affect their relationship. During a party, Vivianna meets Alejandro Cruz, an old friend of Jasper’s. She is drawn to him because he encourages her and reads widely; he is a fan of science fiction, another genre that doesn’t afford respect.
Can Vivianna find the strength she needs to pursue her life’s work and help Jasper let go of his repression so she can have the two men who fulfill her in ways that neither could do on their own? Using quotes and references to classic erotic and literary icons, at one level this is an unconventional romance; at another a discussion of the merits of erotic literature versus more respected forms, and along the way highlights the theme that the mind is the most powerful sexual organ.
